Ed Ryan (b. 1995, Kalamazoo, MI) Ed Ryan is an MFA Candidate in the 2D Design Department. In his practice, Ed works to find ways that graphic design and image making can engage directly with systems, structures, and actions to create new combinations of information and meaning. His interests include experimental publishing, spatial and experiential design, design systems, and the material implications of digital and physical collecting, using found materials, existing structural systems, and a rigorous but intuitive process of recombination to try and pull meaning from the detritus of modernism and contemporary life. Previously, Ed was a Senior Designer at GHD Partners in New York City, where he worked on large-scale environmental and experiential graphic design projects for clients around the country. He holds a BFA in graphic design from Western Michigan University and certificates from the University of California, Berkeley’s College of Environmental Design and Typography Summer School Los Angeles. Ed’s work has been recognized and featured by the Type Directors Club (2020), It’s Nice That (2019), and GDUSA (2019, 2021). He has pursued continuing education at the Cooper Union, the School of Visual Arts, and through the Southland Institute’s Open Curriculum. He is partial to short workshops, long movies, and most beverages made in Milwaukee from malted cereal grains.
