Ashley Karnowski is an MFA candidate at Cranbrook Academy of Art, born and raised in Michigan but having spent the last decade in the Pacific Northwest working as a textile designer in the fashion industry. Her abstract sculptural work incorporates concepts of phenomenology by making her unseen world visible, and references to her design background can be seen in her use of fabric, garments, color, and print. Her uncontained and often suspended works have been referred to as “absurd” or “frozen in space” and she counts moments of intimacy as main sources of inspiration.
