This weathered pair of doc Martens carried Lanzillo through a transformative time in his artistic development. From starting his first job out of college as a metal fabricator for a sculptor based in Minneapolis, to completing and installing his first major public artwork. These shoes are loved and treasured as the footwear that got him through long days and nights in the studio. Continued, kneeling crouching, and climbing as he worked on his large-scale piece eventually weathered away the oil infused leather. The now exposed steel toe, and spark battered leather and tongue mark this pivotal time in this emerging artist’s practice. The work done in these shoes directly led to the opportunity to join the Cranbrook Community. Lanzillo looks back fondly on the time he spent wearing these shoes and the growth and potential, even in their deteriorated state, they represent.
