Tree Chair 2 is a sculpted plywood chair. It’s visual language references natural forms – skeletons and bones, dinosaur anatomy, and dead branches, smooth and free of bark; all while itself being made of the material of a tree: Plywood– a material that has been drastically altered from its original form yet one that retains its structural and sculptural qualities; the layers of plies even resembling grain patterns when carved.

Nicholas Tilma is a designer and artist based in Detroit, Michigan. Through experimental fabrication techniques and mixing of material languages he creates otherworldly furniture, lighting, and objects that mix references to artificial nature and science fiction to address the following questions: How will humans of the future memorialize the natural world when our references are themselves the fake versions of the real thing? How can we acknowledge our collective fear of a dystopian future, while romanticizing its aesthetic? He has shown work in New York City, Ann Arbor, and Detroit. He is currently attending Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills, MI to pursue his MFA in 3D Design.
