Hannah Miller is an artist with a BFA in graphic design from Michigan State University who works with drawing across multiple media. Their work uses painting, drawing, printmaking, animation, and typography to explore what it means to craft a cogent assemblage of identifications with which to navigate the world. Their practice references carnival theater, stop motion filmography, and picture books in its effort to playfully transform traditional artmaking materials into whimsical microcosms occupied by a curious, translucent stranger. The work views the act of drawing and painting as analogous to the act of performance- a technique studied and honed overtime until it appears to convincingly portray reality. Materiality is extracted to exemplify a disconnect from the body. Each piece becomes a projection of thought onto an externally produced and maintained surface. Their most recent work sets concrete non-poetry against illustration to question how we categorize thought and interpret social affect.

Hannah has exhibited their work at SCENE Metrospace and the Kresge Art Center galleries in East Lansing, Michigan. Hannah’s animation in collaborative projects has been featured in film festivals including Short to The Point, Flickfair, and International Short Film Festival Kalmthout. Currently, Hannah is currently pursuing their MFA in Print Media at Cranbrook Academy of Art, slated for graduation in 2024.
