I was born in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico and lived there until I was 19 years old. I moved to the United States in 2017 to study art at Maharishi International University in Iowa where I got my BFA in Art and MA in Studio Art. I am currently living in Michigan and pursuing an MFA in Painting at Cranbrook Academy of Art.
I focus on experimenting with things like texture, weight, color palette and pattern. The process of figuring out how these elements coexist in my work is fascinating to me. I have always been interested in exploring color relationships. Color allows me to activate areas in my paintings in different ways.
Texture is another part that I find really important in my work. I make variating textures using paint in different ways based on finish or consistency and sometimes application. Another way in which I engage with texture is adding different materials to the paint.
My imagery comes from my Puerto Rican background. I paint palm trees because they are a plant that I am familiar with having grown up being surrounded by it. I find the shape of palm trees interesting and I enjoy playing with the shape of palm trees in my paintings and with the negative space in between them. Using this subject of palm trees is a way that I stay connected to my island while living in the Midwest.
