Kelly Agius is an artist based in Metro Detroit, MI. She received a BFA from College for Creative Studies with a minor in Critical Theory. She went on to obtain her MFA in Sculpture at Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills, MI.
Kelly’s practice speaks on the desire to obtain self-awareness through confronting psychological boundaries. She examines how our body stores, suppresses, and recalls traumatic childhood experiences. Specifically, reflecting on self-soothing behaviors, memories, and emotional distress.
Kelly’s process acts as a vital tool in assisting the decompartmentalization of these fragmented memories. This requires making space for vulnerability and finding a sense of stability and safety. Within these moments of openness, she can access emotional pain and accept its lingering presence. This suffering source produces mental imagery, emotions, and bodily sensations — which then becomes translated into simple visual codes and text. Her use of minimal signifers emits a vagueness resembling the effects of dormant memories.
