This is one work from Olga’s Objects Triptych #1 | Hinges On Not Knowing, shown in my 3rd formal critique at CAA. Police looked the other way when his parents called to report that their mild-mannered kid in Louisiana, Quawan “Bobby” Charles, went missing. It appears that he’d been tortured. He was found face down in a foot of water. Authorities ruled his death an accidental drowning. Critics explain that it looks like Quawan went to spend the night at a friend’s house, that his friend’s parents helped with his abduction, and potentially a group of people took turns hurting Quawan before finally killing him and leaving him face down in a creek. I read the most in-depth coverage of this boy’s death in a free periodical published by the Nation of Islam. I picked up the appropriated copy somewhere in Metro Detroit. One after another, for so long, these stories roll in. Sometimes it seems like each story replaces the 1 before it as if violence against people who look like me is just a thing, something to dismiss…like car accidents and the rising pandemic death toll.

“… The presence of the monochrome as a tabula rasa, an erasure of the past.”
