I collect, archive, and make with discarded photographs. I try to preserve sentimental characteristics that play with stereotypical images and reconstruct their significance— I connect with neglected photography. Growing up, I didn’t have an extensive photo album of family and would collect found images to fill this void.
I’m an artist who notices and explores environments of displacement with orphaned images. I play with materiality and content to tease out information that leads into different materials expanding into a deeper understanding of the photo medium. With the images I interact with, I focus on sentimental characteristics– to explore the hackneyed conventions and personal nuances found in dated artifacts. I’m invested in the cultural practice of image capturing and I question the generalizations it denotes.
I don’t use text directly but use the complexities of English and Spanish as a strategy to connect obscured meanings in polysemy words, oxymorons, and their dualities. I use language as tool to help navigate the images I make to emphasize a photograph’s nostalgic qualities. As language is a conceptual form of information, I compare its significance to the images I construct– like photographic charades. In process, I use non-conventional custom tools to playfully get visual results in the shapes of puzzles, repeating or tessellating shapes. By reconstructing its material nature I play into my bilingual upbringing and interpret another type of fluent language– to create patterns in ambiguous views and visual structures.
