Benjamin R. Peters (b. 1998, Iowa City, IA) is a multidisciplinary artist currently based in Detroit, MI. They received a BFA in Studio Art and a BA in Philosophy from University of North Texas, TX. Peters work has been celebrated with a 1st Place award in the 59th Annual Voertman’s Competition, juried by artist Alison Saar. They have also participated in several solo and group shows in the DFW region. Peters is extending their research and work as an MFA candidate in the Painting Department at Cranbrook Academy of Art, further exploring their interests as influenced by continental philosophy—hermeneutics, queer theory, and poststructuralism. They graduate in 2023.

Synthesizing languages of painting, sculpture, and architecture, Benjamin R. Peters questions notions of home, and how queerness fits into its conventional figurations. What does ‘home’ look like? How do we ‘mark’ home? Loosely autobiographical self portraiture is situated alongside domestic materials, constructing fragmented narratives and spaces that point to a search for answers. Even if home remains an ideal fiction, perhaps imagining a utopian kind of dwelling invites one to ask: How do we live?
