Mark hails from Holland, a small town on the shores of Lake Michigan. While getting his bachelor’s degree in sociology, Mark stumbled across the ceramics studio and has been pursuing clay ever since. For the past half decade, he lived in Pittsburgh and spent time as an arts and early childhood educator and making pots in several studios around the city. Just this past fall, Mark moved back to Michigan to attend Cranbrook. Mark enjoys making vessels of all sorts and, more recently, the sporadic sculpture. He layers these objects with anthropomorphized beasts, saturated colors, and repetitive voluminous motifs to explore the lived relational experiences of abundance, excess, consumption, and corpulence.
