Italian theorist Franco ‘Bifo’ Berardi proposes that we are living in a time of mass global hellification due to a self-destructing sociopolitical framework that has been crafted to exploit the majority of people living within its confines. My work explores the possibility of creating heterotopias within this manmade hell, or autonomous spaces of happy survival through the use of play, faux-opulence, collaboration, redistribution of energy, and personal writing as a means to access a more universal projection of a common landscape. I recently watched Babette’s Feast (1987) and have found deep resonance in one of the last lines of the film, “throughout the world sounds one long cry from the heart of the artist: give me leave to do my utmost.” What we have is what we give each other.
