Emmy Bright and Cooper Holoweski Named Print Media Artists-in-Residence at Cranbrook Academy of Art
BLOOMFIELD HILLS, MICH., Feb. 21, 2018– The Cranbrook Academy of Art Board of Governors and Christopher Scoates, the Maxine and Stuart Frankel Director of Cranbrook Academy of Art, announced today that Emmy Bright (Print Media ’16) and Cooper Holoweski have been named Artists-in-Residence for the Academy’s Print Media Department.
Bright is a graduate of Cranbrook Academy of Art, having received her MFA degree in Print Media in 2016. She is an artist working in drawing, print and social practice. Her work investigates subjectivity and desire through the lenses of comedy, art history, pop music, psychology and philosophy. She also holds a M.Ed degree from Harvard and a BA degree in Art History from the University of Chicago. She has hosted recent exhibitions at Quirk Gallery in Richmond, Virginia; Human Resources in Los Angeles, California; The Distillery Gallery in Boston; Rhode Island School of Design Museum in Providence; Ditch Projects in Eugene, Oregon; and Yve Yang Gallery in New York.
She has produced social practice projects for the DeCordova Museum and Sculpture Park in Lincoln, Massachusets and Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. She has performed at Public Pool in Hamtramck, Michigan, and ArtSpace in New Haven, Connecticut. Her book, More Stupids: A Tarot, featuring prints and writing, is forthcoming from 3 Hole Press. She has taught art, research methods and pedagogical practice at RISD, City College New York, Ox-Bow School of Art, Providence College and Bryant University. She has been awarded fellowships and residencies at Ox-Bow School of Art, Vermont Studio Center, New Urban Arts, Penland School of Crafts, and Haystack. Currently, she lives and works in Detroit where she is represented by David Klein Gallery.
Cooper Holoweski is an artist working in print media, video, and sound. He holds an MFA degree from the Rhode Island School of Design and has held residencies at Taller 99 in Santiago, Chile; Gallery Titanik in Turku, Finland; and Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture.
In 2015 he was awarded the Media Residency at the Clocktower Gallery and the Keyholder Residency at the Lower East Side Printshop in New York. His prints have been described as “striking” by Paul Coldwell in Art in Print, and his video work has been praised by Sarah Schmerler of Art in America as “magical” and “infinitely watchable.” Recent exhibitions include: Nostalgia and Obsolescence, Small Editions, Brooklyn, New York (2016); Cannibal Universe, Clocktower Gallery at Pioneer Works, Brooklyn, New York (2016); Dead Air, Cohen Gallery, Brown University, Providence, Rhode Island (2017); and Basement Cosmos, CCS Center Galleries, Detroit, Michigan (2017). He was awarded the Prix de Print by Art in Print magazine in Spring of 2017.

Bright and Holoweski take over the position from Susan Goethel Campbell, a 1989 graduate of Cranbrook Academy of Art, who has served as the interim Print Media Artist-in-Residence for two years.
“Both Emmy and Cooper have been visiting artists in the department for the past two years, so they know the program and students well,” said Campbell. “They bring with them a diverse skill set, critical dialogue and enthusiasm for the relevance of print media in contemporary art practice.”
