Cooper Holoweski Named Artist-in-Residence and Head of the Print Media Department at Cranbrook Academy of Art

Bloomfield Hills, Mich., March 12, 2024 – Today, Cranbrook Academy of Art announced that Cooper Holoweski has been named the new Artist-in-Residence and Head of the Print Media Department. Holoweski has served as co-head of the Print Media department alongside Emmy Bright since 2018. Bright and Holoweski were appointed to the roles, and to remain consistent with Academy hiring practices, a formal search to fill the role was held in the fall of 2023. Bright is moving to a full-time studio practice.
Holoweski is a Detroit native who works in print, video, and sculpture, exploring the intersection of spirituality and consumerism through everyday objects and materials.
An accomplished artist and designer, he has presented solo exhibitions at galleries in New York and Detroit and has held residencies domestically at Clocktower Gallery, Lower East Side Printshop, and the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture. Internationally, he has held residencies at Taller 99 in Santiago, Chile, Gallery Titanik, Turku in Finland, and Frans Masereel Centrum in Kasterlee, Belgium last summer.
His work has been featured in Art in America and Art in Print. In 2017, he was awarded the “Prix de Print” award by Art in Print and in 2019, his short film, As Above, So Below won the “Best Regional Filmmaker” award at the Ann Arbor Film Festival. In 2023, he launched a new book, Nothing Everything Nothing, which traces the evolution of human consciousness from before the Big Bang until the eventual collapse of the universe.
He holds an MFA from the Rhode Island School of Design, in addition to a BFA in political science and a BA in printmaking from the University of Michigan.
“After a long search that surfaced enormous talent from across the country, we determined that Cooper is the perfect fit to guide the Print Media department into the future,” said Lynn Tomaszewski, Dean of Academic Affairs at Cranbrook Academy of Art. “His work and practice bring a broad conceptual frame for the department and his strong technical skills in both traditional and new technologies align with the current needs of our students today. We look forward to how he will continue to implement his vision for the future of the department and Print Media.”

About the position at Cranbrook, Holoweski says, “I’m extremely proud of the work Emmy Bright and I have done over the past six years. I look forward to continuing teaching and mentoring the talented students of Cranbrook Print Media, helping them hone their unique voices as a new generation of artists and makers.” Holoweski continues, “In a moment where cultural production is so intertwined with the technologies of sharing media, this is an exciting time for print, a discipline defined by the circulation of images and ideas. In both my studio practice and teaching, I take an expansive approach that uses printmaking as a foundation for thinking about a multitude of contemporary art practices. Through this approach, I aim to make the Cranbrook Print Media department a leading voice within the evolving national discourse around print in contemporary art.”
The Print Media department at Cranbrook was first called Printmaking formed by Laurence Barker (1960-1970) and then led by Bob Evermon (1969-1973), Irwin Hollander (1973-1975), Connor Everts (1976-1981), Steve Murakishi (1981-2002), Randy Bolton (2002-2016), Susan Goethel Campbell, interim (2016-2018), and Emmy Bright and Cooper Holoweski (2018-present).
Holoweski will begin his official tenure in September of 2024.
